Thoughts on Editorial Strategy, Multimedia, and a Multichannel Platform
On July 27 I was invited to give a guest lecture to students in the MS in Strategic Communications program at Columbia University. It was my third time doing so, but until now I hadn’t shared notes from such a privileged appearance.
My “Six Steps to Create an Editorial Strategy” is on the syllabus and normally I talk about that, but this year I was asked to present a week later on the module about multimedia in employee comms. So I combined the topics.
A snippet from that appearance:
Producing a video takes a lot of energy and resources, including cash money. So why wouldn’t you want to squeeze every last drop out of that rock?
Re-purposing video:
Grows one piece of content into many
Increases return on investment
Increases the likelihood of employee engagement
Increases your team’s value
Gets your creative juices flowing
Say you have a three-minute video of anything—one of your execs giving a quarterly update; frontline workers showing off new assembly line equipment; new hires participating in a community cleanup event; whatever.
Don’t publish just to one channel (e.g., the video section of your intranet).
Do publish across your platform (e.g., think about how to use all of the outlets you control, and some you don’t).
Want to know how to re-use a video 20+ different ways? Read my lecture notes.

Insider Comms: WWE Memo & More
Here's the memo CEO Vince McMahon, who's facing scrutiny around hush money payments for sexual misconduct, sent to WWE employees. I thought about sharing this exclusively with Mister Editorial’s paid subscribers (with commentary, like I often do), but I'm kind of at a loss for words.
Paid subscribers to Mister Editorial get exclusive access to executive and internal memos with my analysis of what worked and what didn’t. Some examples:
