How to Use AI to Think Like a CCO

You want to be indispensable.

Keeping up with and using artificial intelligence to be more efficient, productive, and creative is one of the best ways to remain relevant in the comms profession.

  • 🤫 In case you haven’t heard: the robots aren’t coming. They’re already here.

In this article I show you how to use AI to adopt the persona of a chief communications officer to enhance your strategic planning skills. Why?

  • Strategic perspective: Adopting a CCO persona can encourage you to think more holistically about communications strategies and their effects on an organization.

  • AI literacy: The exercise provides practical and actionable experience using generative AI, which is now essential for success1 in our profession.

  • Creative problem-solving: Using AI this way can lead to innovative solutions by getting you to think outside your usual role and parameters.

  • Preparation for leadership: Oh, so you want to be a CCO? This is a useful exercise in understanding high-level decision-making. Until you take your seat on that cushy throne, you can use AI to act as if (NSFW).

How to Use AI to Think Like a CCO

Here are the eight steps and actions you need to do to set up and interact with an AI CCO:


1. Set the Stage

To begin, choose to work with ChatGPT (an accessible chatbot, arguably the frontrunner in the gen AI space) or Claude (on ChatGPT’s heels; has a better personality). Both tools let you save your conversations so you can build on them over time.

  • For this exercise I used ChatGPT-4o.

As we did in the exercise on teaching AI to write in your exec’s voice (🔒), begin by letting the chatbot know what you’re up to.
