The Ultimate List of Books for Communications Professionals
The authority on mixternal communications
I reached out to internal communications professionals on Twitter, LinkedIn, and through this newsletter to ask for book recommendations for internal comms. I was overwhelmed by suggestions.
Below is the ultimate list of books for internal comms professionals, recommended by internal comms professionals. They are categorized as follows:
Reference books
Writing and Editing
Internal communications profession
Getting the most out of work
Leadership and management
Noticeably the subject matter is spread across several subject areas, including communications, management, diversity and inclusion, human resources and talent development, storytelling, sociology, psychology, and even neuroscience. This broad array of topics reflects the nature of the internal comms function within an organization: IC cuts across disciplines because we have to work with every single department and layer of an organization. We must be knowledgeable across several fields to be successful.
Interestingly, most of the recommendations (32) are for books about leadership and management. This isn’t surprising, given that internal comms works so closely with an organization’s leadership; it helps to get into the mindset of those for whom you carry water. Of course, many IC professionals are also leaders of their own teams, and they’re also perceived as leaders by the general employee population.
I am also pleased to see that so many people recommended self-improvement books. Again, no surprise, as the IC pros I come across tend to be driven, self-starters, and always on the lookout for a career-advancing opportunity.
Click any link to read more about the book and to purchase it from an independent bookstore (U.S.). (Some books appear on more than one list.)
Special shout outs to @HarrietSmallies, @holddani, @CIPR, @KenR_FW_TX, @The_PRMan, @Vision2Voice, and the #ICBookClub for loads of recommendations!
