M&A Comms
“Leading communications for a Mergers & Acquisition (M&A) project can be one of the most enjoyable parts of a comms role,” says Justine Williams, a leadership coach for IC pros. She goes on, “It can also be one of the most frustrating if you’re brought in too late, overwhelmed by the workload, or the needs of impacted employees aren’t being properly addressed.” Preach.
Williams has eight tips for M&A comms success for the before, during, and after processes. They are:
Build a relationship with the Strategy or M&A team.
Set clear goals from the outset.
Don’t go it alone. Share the responsibilities.
List internal and external stakeholders you need to communicate with.
Create a Q&A document - early.
Challenge the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) list.
Request a ‘Rules of the Road’ document from the Legal team.
Hold an after-action-review.

Getting leadership on board with your editorial strategy is important if you want the plan to succeed. Even though leadership claims “our employees are our best asset,” the team that oversees communicating with said “assets” is often an afterthought. (A diatribe for another day.)
